Multi-Point
Automated Sampling System (MASS)
AIG
Tuning, SCR/SNCR Optimization, Catalyst Management and Boiler Optimization
CleanAir’s
proprietary flue gas profiling system called the Multi-Point
Automated Sampling System (MASS) is the perfect
solution when fast and accurate NOx, CO, CO2, and O2 emission
profiles are required. Our
engineers use this system regularly for AIG Tuning and SCR/SNCR
optimization, as well as boiler efficiency studies.
The “typical” MASS as illustrated below, uses a series
of automated sample modules with integrated programmable logic controllers
(PLC’s) to sequentially and rapidly cycle through an existing
multipoint sampling grid or temporary multipoint sampling grid installed
by CleanAir.
Our
teams of trained personnel and state-of-the-art equipment are
ready to help you in all facets of mercury testing and consulting. We
can determine the mercury speciation over single air pollution
control devices or provide compliance strategy planning using mercury
balances across entire facilities. With our continuous mercury
CEMS or semi-continuous sorbent-based monitoring systems, we can
study the long-term effects of fuel variability and control equipment
performance.

The MASS System Advantage
- Quality Data – The
MASS uses measurement devices such as chemiluminescent analyzers
for NOx determination, gas filter correlation analyzers for
CO, and paramagnetic analyzers for oxygen determination.
CleanAir
believes that chemiluminescent NOx and paramagnetic O2 analyzers
provide the most reliable and repeatable results, and are superior
to other measurement techniques, such as electrochemical cells
used by others for AIG tuning.
Electrochemical sensor technology can be prone to cross interference,
noise, short term drift at low concentrations expected
at an SCR outlet, drift due to ambient temperature changes during
the normal course of a day, and overloading or saturation over
extended time periods of manual traversing, which could take
up to three hours for a 64 point grid.
- Fast
Cycle Time -
The MASS was designed to sample up to 128 points
in less than 11 minutes. The system
may be configured in various ways to accommodate
a variety of sample time requirements for as many points as
needed. For
example, the standard setup would allow six groups
of six (36 sample points) to be sequentially sampled by two
banks of analyzers at 30 seconds per point for a total of 18
minutes per traverse. An
84-point grid sampled using four banks of analyzers
at 30 seconds per point would still only require
21 minutes to complete an 84 point traverse.
The MASS minimizes the effects of boiler load swings or temporal
changes and associated measurement bias when determining the NOx
distribution profile.
- System Design – Designed for fast and
easy set up. Large capacity moisture condensers and proprietary
switching valve configuration minimizes the sampling delays due
to particulate plugging inherent with other automated system
designs.
- Economical and Minimal Impact to Operations -
This approach reduces AIG tuning to a day as compared to a week
using manual techniques based on plant configuration and operating
conditions.
