Determination of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins and Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans from Municipal Waste Combustors – USEPA Method 23

USEPA Method 23 is used to determine emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from stationary sources.  Other semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) such as PAHs and PCBs may be determined using this method with appropriate analytical modifications.

A sample is withdrawn isokinetically from the gas stream and collected in a sample probe, on a glass fiber filter, and on a packed column of adsorbent material (XAD-II resin).  The PCDDs and PCDFs are extracted from the sample, separated by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC), and measured by high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS).
