Cooling Tower and Heat Rejection Thermal Performance and Consulting

CleanAir can generate “as-found” performance curves to predict cold water temperature as a function of inlet wet bulb and cooling range for various water flow rates from cooling tower thermal performance test data. For power plants, the “as-found” data can be used as part of a heat rejection cycle analysis. The heat rejection cycle analysis can be used to determine economic break even points for cooling tower modifications through an evaluation of the loss in plant capacity or heat rate.

Condenser and Pump Testing

Because the water flow rate measurement is required for cooling tower performance testing and water flow rate is also the most difficult and time consuming measurement when evaluating condenser or pump performance, it is often cost effective to perform these other tests during the same mobilization as a cooling tower performance test. CleanAir routinely performs evaluations of steam condenser performance in accordance with the HEI test code and pump performance in accordance with PTC-8.2 or PTC-18. The results of these tests are an indication of the condenser cleanliness and the pump operation relative to its performance curve, which can help diagnose problems with the heat rejection loop.
